Fuzzy Feathery Top : A fuzzy, textural T-shaped top, knit from the bottom up using a two- color brioche stitch pattern that resembles lightweight feathers.

Do you love my Fuzzy Feathery Shawl? Meet the coordinating Fuzzy Feathery Top, knit using the same stitch pattern!! I developed this pattern with Chicken Coop Dyeworks and was super inspired by chickens and feathers!! The unique brioche stitch pattern not only adds a touch of sophistication but also enhances the top’s warmth and softness, making it your go-to choice for chilly days and evenings. The short sleeves make this a fantastic transitional piece for your wardrobe as well!

Yarn Notes:
This top pattern is meant to be used with a fuzzy lace yarn and a smooth fingering yarn to achieve the best results. You could even try two skeins of fingering weight yarn from your stash or favorite yarn brand, some of my test knitters did that. But be aware that your yardage / meterage amounts will vary from what is included in this pattern. I’ve included photos of my yarn in skein form here.

Skill level:
Intermediate – Advanced.

Techniques used:
knit, purl, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), brioche increases and decreases (no br4st dec!), knitting in the round, Twisted German Cast On, Elastic Bind Off, Mattress Stitch, Three-Needle Bind Off.

Construction Notes:
This light and fluffy all-weather top is knit from the bottom up in a T-shape. You will cast on your stitches for the hem and immediately begin working in the round in a feather-like two-color brioche stitch pattern that will continue for the entirety of the top. After working the main body of your top, you will separate the Front and Back and begin working flat. The Front and Back will be worked almost identically. Stitches will be cast on at either edge for your Sleeves, while continuing the same two-color brioche stitch pattern all the way to your Neck and Shoulders. The Shoulders will be seamed together using the Three Needle Bind Off, with the seam facing the Contrast Side of your top, while the Neck stitches will be simply bound off, creating a boatneck shape. After completing your top, you will need finish it by seaming the underarms of your Sleeves using the Mattress Stitch.

I love this top shape so much! It is so easy to wear and the construction is so simple. It’s a great way to continue a stitch pattern and showcase it throughout the entire top! I have designed this top to be completely reversible. So depending on your mood, you can wear whichever side you’re feeling like!! I love to style mine with high-waisted jeans or over a cute dress.

This pattern is both written and charted for your convenience!

A bit of a back story

I was approached by publisher Page Street Publishing to create a book similar to my online course, Mastering Brioche with Knit Graffiti! Since those patterns are already available to the public, they asked for brand new patterns, but with the same end goal: learning and mastering brioche knitting. This new book is full of 16 BRAND NEW patterns, never before seen or knit!! There is also tons of information before the patterns on How to Brioche, with photo tutorials and all my fave tips and tricks.

I worked with all indie yarn dyers, a different one for each pattern! Shown on the front cover are 2 of the shawl patterns from the book, using Serendipitous Wool and Aya Fibers! As you can see, I was the model for all the photos!! My amazing husband took the photos in the book, which were taken around Corpus Christi, TX, the city where we live. I like to think of the book as telling a story about where we live, with photos taken in all our favorite spots.

Back cover

What people are saying

Lesley’s incredible sense of color and obvious joy in knitting shines through every page of this beautiful book. It’s imbued with a sense of joie de vivre that’s a delight.

Susan Cropper, Loop London

If you are looking for a way to incorporate Brioche into your knitting repertoire, Brioche Knitting for Beginners and Beyond is a great place to start. There is nothing more motivating when learning a new technique than knitting that new technique with COLOR! Lesley brings together her passion for colors and the use of brioche knit technique to engage your knitting in a new and fun way!

Aimée Gille, La Bien Aimée

Brioche Knitting for Beginners and Beyond is THE brioche book for everyone! I always tell knitters that once they start brioche-ing, they’ll never go back! This addictive stitch brings a new rhythm to your knitting that will bring interest and a new level of engagement to your projects, and if you are like me, the squish factor alone will make you want to add in a little bit of brioche here and there in all of your projects. Lesley makes this advanced skill approachable for all levels of knitters in her new book. It’s like she is sitting there with you, sharing all of her best brioche secrets while cheering you on as you progress from a brioche newbie to a brioche master! Get ready to hear “What?! You made that!!??” as you knit all of these inspiring, color-packed knits!

Andrea Mowry, Drea Renee Knits

Lesley’s refreshing approach to knitting incorporates a strong foundation in technical proficiency.  Brioche knitting is a difficult technique to master for many knitters. We are often contacted by our customers who have found brioche knitting made easier by using our Stiletto points but are also looking for additional instruction.  Lesley’s approach begins with the basics and gently guides the knitter toward more difficult techniques.  The step-by-step approach increases the knitter’s confidence, as they create beautiful projects.  By infusing a fun and engaging approach to a technical guide to brioche, this will become a must-have book for any knitter.

Signature Needle Arts

What I love about Lesley’s designs and teachings is that her patterns are scalable: from entry level brioche to challenging masterpieces. She has very clear directions and photo tutorials for her modern silhouettes and designs that make you just want to dive in. Plus Lesley’s wit, whimsy, and joy comes across in these instructions and designs. This makes learning brioche fun; the knitter can accomplish these challenges because Lesley gives the reader everything they need to succeed. As a yarn shop owner, this makes it easy to get customers to take on this fascinating stitch, leading our knitters to continue to be inspired to knit their next brioche pattern.

Cadence Kidwell, Proprietress of Fuzzy Goat

Lesley does indeed open up the “magical world of brioche knitting”. She has taught multiple in person events for HCW with enthusiasm and a contagious can-do attitude ….this book has the exact same feel. Her patterns have that signature Lesley style!! She combines color, texture and rhythmic patterns to create fabrics that seem like a great choreographed dance.

I would recommend this book to a curious knitter as well as to an experienced brioche knitter….

Stelliferous : Knitting Pattern PDF

Stelliferous : An ethereal circular yoke sweater knit using a combination of two-color brioche nebulas and two-color garter stitch backgrounds.

This sweater pattern was inspired by my Stellaire shawl, which uses the same brioche stitch pattern in a new and different way!

Be sure to check out La Bien Aimée for some amazing yarn! They have the original colors that I used in my sample, or you can grab some colors that inspire you!!

Skill level:
Intermediate – advanced. This is a great first-time brioche sweater pattern if you’d like to try to make one!

Techniques used:
knit, purl, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), brioche increases and decreases (no br4st dec!!), circular yoke shaping, knitting in the round

Construction Notes:
This circular yoke pullover sweater is knit from the top down, starting with a small two-color garter stitch neckband. After working this neckband, you will begin the circular yoke shaping, which consists of graphic vertical stripes of two-color brioche and two-color garter stitch. Increases will happen in both the brioche and garter portions so that it creates an even width between the two stitch patterns. As the yoke expands, the brioche increases and decreases begin to develop the nebula-like arrangement. After you separate the Sleeves and Body, the rest will be smooth sailing with simple two-color garter stitch. The Body will be knit straight for a cropped, boxy look. The Sleeves will be quite wide to create a puffed sleeve, with a tight cuff. This sweater is designed to be a faded or blended garment, so grab a fade or gradient of colors and blend them in when you begin to run out! Color Blending instructions are included for exactly how to add your next color.

This sweater is perfect for layering over dresses with its slightly cropped silhouette. I also love styling it over high-waisted wide-leg jeans for a more casual look.

Yarn amounts are shown in MC and CC yarn for entire sweater. Yardages / meterages listed above are for each color (MC1, MC2, CC1, CC2, etc). These can all be different colors, choosing from a fade or gradient to create a gorgeous blended garment! I knit size 4, so only needed 4 different colors. The best way to choose your fade is to choose one color scheme for your MC and a separate one for your CC.
