Spiderwebby : A stranded colorwork cowl perfect for all spider and spiderweb lovers! Inspired by Spider Gwen from Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse, I wanted to create a cosplay (costume play) of her amazing hood. With 3 different options, you are sure to find something you love!

Option Notes:
There are 3 different options included with this pattern! Think of them as variations of the same pattern, but worn and finished in different ways. See more sizing information below. The main photo here shows the cowl in Option 2.

Yarn Notes:
I recommend choosing colors with high contrast for Colors A & B! Taking a black and white photo of the yarns next to each other will help to determine their value and how much contrast they have.

This pattern has both written instructions, as well as a chart ONLY for the stranded colorwork.

Skill level:
Beginner – This is a fantastic first stranded colorwork project if you are new to the technique!! It is very repetitive and only uses 2 colors.

Techniques used:
knit, knitting in the round, Provisional Cast On, grafting / Kitchener.

Construction and Styling:

There are 3 options for this cowl, and all 3 are constructed virtually the same way. You will begin with a Provisional Cast On, working in the round completely for the entire project.

Option 1 is for those of you who just want to showcase the spiderweb pattern! So for this option, you simply knit the Spiderwebby stranded colorwork pattern, give it a twist and have a lovely spiderweb cowl that you can wear all year. The sample shown was knit by one of my test knitters, Marilyn.

I first designed Option 2, inspired by the hood worn by Gwen Stacy aka Spider Woman aka Ghost Spider in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. I wanted to develop a Cosplay (Costume Play) of her hood that I could wear everyday. The colors of her costume are my favorites and I scoured the internet to find the perfect spiderweb image, developing it into a stranded colorwork pattern. All Options will begin with the Spiderwebby stranded colorwork, which is fun and easy to memorize. For Option 2, think of this like the inside or lining of your cowl / hood. You will then work the Stockinette Half to finish the cowl. I chose hot pink and turquoise for my colorwork to mimic Ghost Spider’s iconic colors, with a creamy speckled outer hood. Feel free to choose whatever colors speak to you! After knitting the entire thing, the Spiderwebby Half is folded inside the Stockinette Half, then grafted together to create a seamless look. You can also turn it inside out to showcase the spiderweb pattern if you’d like! This option is also very easy to modify the length by adding or omitting pattern repeats.

Option 3 is very similar to Option 2, except fewer stitches are cast on and the Spiderwebby Half is not folded inside. After working both halves, it is simply grafted together so both sides are showcased on the outside, making a long circular tube that can be worn around the neck and shoulders. For my sample, I chose some deep jewel tones I had in my stash, with a loud pop of neon yellow.

No matter what size of this cowl you create, it will keep you so warm! Make one to celebrate Halloween, or gift it to your favorite Spider Gwen or Spider-Man fan.

1: Colorwork only, twisted and grafted: 10” / 25 cm height and 30” / 76 cm circumference, measured after blocking, twisting for infinity cowl, and grafting.

2: Full length with colorwork folded in: 22” / 56 cm height and 31” / 78.5 cm interior circumference, measured after blocking, folding and grafting.

3: Full length, not folded in, simply grafted: 12” / 30.5 cm height and 44” / 112 cm circumference, measured after blocking and grafting.

» Gauge (measured after blocking):
Stockinette: 29 sts and 34 rnds = 4” / 10 cm, measured in stockinette stitch knit in the round

Stranded colorwork: 34 sts and 36 rnds = 4” / 10 cm, measured in stockinette stitch with stranded colorwork, knit in the round

MC: 2 skeins of Artemis Yarns Singles in Thalia (cream speckled; 100% Superwash Merino; 400 yds / 366 m per 100 g)

Color A: 2 skeins of Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles in Jelly (hot pink; 100% Superwash Merino; 400 yds / 366 m per 100 g)

Color B: 1 skein of Old Soul Fiber Co. Soul Single in Westin (blue; 100% Superwash Merino; 400 yds / 366 m per 100 g)

» Needles:
16 – 24” / 40.5 – 61 cm US 3 / 3.25 mm circular needles

Circular needles are used for knitting in the round. Adjust needle size as needed to obtain proper gauge.

» Tools:
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and grafting, row counter or preferred method for keeping track of pattern, contrasting stitch marker for noting BOR, 14 (16, 22) stitch markers for noting pattern repeats, 2 lengths of scrap yarn / thread for provisional cast on and placing stitches on hold, additional gauge circular needle for grafting
