Mischief Maker : Make some mischief with this 80’s inspired fishnet lace crop top!
Back in 2022, I designed my Truly Outrageous shawl, which was inspired by Jem and the Holograms! If you’re not familiar with this show, it was incredibly popular in the mid-80’s…and I was obsessed as a child. Now that I’m an adult, I’m doing everything in my power to re-create my childhood obsessions and develop knit versions of the costumes from my favorite films and shows that I can wear in my everyday life. #knitcosplay
After designing Truly Outrageous, Kemper (the dyer of Junkyarn) and I thought how cool it would be to develop a crop top pattern using the Pizzazz-inspired fishnet lace from the shawl, and the colorway of course! Thus, Mischief Maker was born, influenced by one of the songs performed by The Misfits (from Jem and the Holograms) called Makin’ Mischief.
Yarn Notes:
Honestly any fingering / sock yarn will work for this top! Go for solid / semi-solid like I did, or speckles can be so fun too! The fishnet lace is just gorgeous and really stands out in a bright color. It could also be very cool in a darker color yarn with a bright tank underneath. I designed this top to be a Cosplay (Costume Play) for Pizzazz from Jem and the Holograms and was inspired by her wardrobe and 80’s crop tops.
Skill level:
Beginner lace! This is a fantastic pattern if you want to try some lace. It’s very repetitive and intuitive once you get going.
Techniques used:
knit, purl, yarn-over, center double decrease, knitting in the round, Twisted German Cast On, Elastic Bind Off, Mattress Stitch, Three-Needle Bind Off.

Construction Notes:
This fishnet lace crop top was designed to be worn off the shoulder, with a very wide boatneck. It is worked in a T-shape, starting at the bottom and working up to the top. You will begin casting on your bottom hem stitches, working a bit of stockinette to create a rolled look and then you will begin the fishnet lace stitch pattern in the round. You will work your Body with no shaping for a boxy look until you separate the Front and Back. After separating, you will cast on stitches for your Sleeves, and continue working up to the Shoulders flat. The Shoulders are seamed together using the Three Needle Bind Off, with the seam facing the inside of the top. You will then seam your underarms to complete your top.
I love this top shape so much! It is so easy to wear and the construction is so simple. It’s a great way to continue a stitch pattern and showcase it throughout the entire top! I love to style mine over a cute dress or a tank top and leggings for a casual look. It’s perfect as a costume as well if you like to dress up!!

32” / 81 cm or longer US 5 / 3.75 mm circular needles
Circular needles are used for knitting in the round and for accommodating a larger number of stitches. Adjust needle size as needed to obtain proper gauge.
» Tools:
3 lengths of smooth waste yarn or stitch holders, 1 stitch marker for noting beginning of round, 1 additional gauge needle for Three Needle Bind Off, tapestry needle, row counter or your preferred method for keeping track of pattern, additional lengths of smooth waste yarn for adding lifelines (optional)
