Gem Moon : a rectangular shawl knit on the bias showcasing Mosaic Gem Moons and Brioche Shells. Each stripe is different from the last, showing how different color combinations can transform into something completely new.

Yarn Notes:
No rules for this shawl!! Grab 3 skeins of yarn in your favorite colors to create a gorgeous wrap that you’ll never want to take off! I chose some subtle contrasts, but be sure to check out my test knitters’ projects for some color inspiration! Take a look at the last photo here to see my yarn in skein form.

Skill level:
Intermediate – I highly recommend previous brioche experience before knitting this shawl. Mosaic knitting is a fantastic transition to two-color brioche. Basic brioche skills are recommended, but this is a great pattern to learn brioche increases and decreases!

Techniques used:
knit, purl, knit increases and decreases, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), brkyobrk (2-st brioche increase), brLsl dec and brRsl dec (2-st decreases), sl1yo, Twisted German Cast On, Elastic Bind Off, sideways bias shawl knitting. I wrote this pattern to be very approachable to beginners who want to try brioche knitting!!

This pattern is both written and charted for your convenience!

Construction Notes:
This lightweight rectangular wrap is knit on the bias from side to side, cast on edge to bind off edge. Once the stitches are cast on, 1 stitch is increased at the right edge, while 1 stitch is decreased at the left edge, to create a lovely angle for the stripes to follow. You will begin with a Mosaic Gem Moon stripe, then a Brioche Shell stripe. You will be working these 2 stripes for the majority of shawl, switching up your colors for each one. You will work 3 combinations, then work garter stripes for a center focal point. Then you will work the MIRROR image of the first 3 color combinations, except switching your colors. I was inspired by the Zodiac sign Gemini, as I designed this shawl as a birthday gift for Kemper (the dyer behind Junk Yarn). Maybe you noticed the little Gemini symbol in the Mosaic Gem Moons?

I love wearing this shawl draped loosely over my shoulders to keep off the chill of a summer evening. It can also be wrapped tightly around your neck for colder days. This is the perfect summer shawl to show off some of your favorite yarns! The colors I chose have a very mermaid vibe.
