Vaulted : A one-color brioche hat pattern with sizes for the entire family! The vaulted stripes add definition to the body and crown of the hat, with the brioche adding thickness and warmth, perfect for cooler temperatures. Makes for great gift knitting, too!!

I often tell people that knitting One-Color Brioche in the round is a fantastic way to learn the stitches! It is also a great transition to learning Two-Color Brioche, without having to worry about two different colors of yarn at the same time. I designed this pattern to be a way to practice, to teach your hands the muscle memory of brioche, while also knitting something for everyone in the family.

Great stashbuster pattern!! Feel free to use this pattern as more of a formula, adding as many or as few stripes as you want! Make thinner stripes, or thicker stripes! I have written out exactly the way I have knit mine, but use your own creativity!! You could even knit a 4 color version, or a 2 color version with less striping. Great for using up those DK leftovers!

Don’t have a baby to knit for? Neither do I, so I gave the Baby size to my son to adorn his favorite stuffed animal!

Skill level: Beginner Brioche friendly! Learning new techniques in brioche knitting in the round is fantastic!! Techniques used: knit, purl, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), brioche increases and decreases, knitting in the round, Twisted German Cast On.

This pattern is both written and charted for your convenience.

Construction Notes: This super fun and addicting striped One-Color Brioche hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. Knitting one-color brioche in the round is a bit different than knitting it straight. There is one round using brioche knitting (barking), and one round using brioche purling (burping). I have written and charted this pattern exactly the way that I knit my samples (except for the Adult Large), but feel free to use it as more of a formula for your own striped version! The Vaulted Stripes are very repetitive and the color changes make it an exciting knit that will fly off your needles!

Sizes: Baby (Child, Adult Small, Adult Large): 12 (16, 20, 24)” / 30 (40.5, 51, 61) cm unstretched circumference and 5.5 (7.75, 9.5, 9.5)” / 14 (19.5, 24, 24) cm height (taken after blocking), designed to fit with 1 – 2.5” / 2.5 – 6 cm negative ease. Adult Large could also fit with a bit of positive ease for a slouchier hat, or if you have a lot of hair that you like to fit under your hat.

MATERIALS:

Yarn: 70 (150, 215, 270) yds / 63 (137, 196, 247) m DK weight
Color A: 40 (85, 115, 140) yds / 36 (78, 105, 128) m
Color B: 30 (65, 100, 130) yds / 27 (59, 91, 119) m

Baby sample shown in: Brooklyn Tweed Dapple (60% Merino Wool, 40% Cotton; 165 yds / 151 m per 50 g)
A: 1 skein in Seafoam (mint)
B: 1 skein in Cerise (pink)

Child sample shown in: Brooklyn Tweed Arbor (100% Targhee Wool; 145 yds / 133 m per 50 g)
A: 1 skein in Sashiko (navy blue)
B: 1 skein in Seaglass (mint)

Adult Small sample shown in: Brooklyn Tweed Arbor (100% Targhee Wool; 145 yds / 133 m per 50 g)
A: 1 skein in Morandi (gray)
B: 1 skein in Klimt (mustard yellow)

Adult Large sample was knit using leftovers of Arbor from the other sizes. I mixed up the stripe pattern a bit on this one.

Yarn Notes: I used Brooklyn Tweed Arbor for all sizes of this pattern, except for the Baby size. I love using cotton yarn for baby knits because it’s so soft and easy to care for. But cotton yarn with brioche stitches can be a bit floppy and unpredictable. That’s why I love Brooklyn Tweed’s Dapple yarn! It is a cotton / wool blend, which helps to give it the bounce back that is essential with brioche knitting. It is still oh-so-soft, perfect for being next to sensitive baby skin.

Needles: 16” & 40” / 40 & 100 cm US 6 / 4.0 mm circular needle for Magic Loop method, or US 6 / 4.0 mm DPN’s, whichever method you prefer for knitting in the rnd.

Tools: tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch marker for marking beginning of round, optional 2 (3, 4, 5) contrasting stitch markers for noting pattern repeats

Gauge: 20 sts x 24 rows = 4” / 10 cm in one-color brioche stitch pattern in the round (measured after blocking)

I actually knit the first sample, in gray and yellow, over 2 years ago. I am so happy to be able to finally publish this pattern, and I hope that you can find a size that works for you or someone you love. I want to thank my amazing Tech Editor, Meaghan Schmaltz, for her feedback and help. I also want to thank my husband, Brian Robinson, for trying his hand at photography and for taking these incredible photos of us.
