Description

Let’s take turns and knit two hats in brioche! Taking Turns includes patterns for two different hats – Hat #One is full of texture using one-color brioche, while Hat #Two creates exciting two-color brioche stripes! Brioche in a light bulky weight yarn creates the squishiest fabric, so grab a skein or two and let’s go!

Skill level: Beginner to Intermediate brioche. Basic brioche skills are not required, but are recommended. Techniques used: Knitting in the round, knitting, purling, brioche decreases.

If you have not yet tried brioche, Hat #One is a great starting point!! One-color brioche in the round is quite similar to two-color brioche, and with the light bulky yarn, this hat knits up so quickly!! I was so inspired by this custom colorway by Melissa of Hey Lady Hey that I created this pattern especially for it! One-color brioche and syncopating stripes creates such beautiful texture and can really make a variegated or speckled yarn shine!! Hat #Two is an adventure in two-color brioche, with syncopating color stripes!!

Size and dimensions: Both hats are one size; Adult: 20” / 50.8cm circ. x 8.5” / 21.6cm height (after blocking). Hats are modeled on a 22” circumference adult head.

Gauge: 15 sts x 18 rows = 4” / 10cm in brioche stitch (for both hats; measured after blocking)

Yarn:
Hat #One:
130yds / 119m light bulky weight yarn (pom not included)
Shown in:
-1 skein Hey Lady Hey Bulky Targhee in color Books and Pens (100% Targhee wool; 185 yds / 100g)

Hat #Two:
Main color (MC): 90yds / 82m light bulky weight yarn
Contrast color (CC): 65yds / 60m light bulky weight yarn
Shown in:
MC: -1 skein Hey Lady Hey Bulky Targhee in color Scabiosa (100% Targhee wool; 185 yds / 100g)
CC: -1 skein Hey Lady Hey Bulky Targhee in color Ephemera (100% Targhee wool; 185 yds / 100g)

A quick note about light bulky weight yarn :: it is actually much closer to an aran or heavy worsted weight yarn. So be sure to keep this in mind when choosing your yarn for this project!

Needles: 16” & 40” US 9 / 5.5mm circular needle for magic loop method, or US 9 / 5.5mm DPN’s, whichever method you prefer for knitting in the rnd, or size needed to obtain gauge. I find that circular needles are much easier with complicated brioche stitches.

Tools: tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch marker for marking beginning of round, 3 contrasting stitch markers
