Description

I hope you can find inspiration and peace during this uncertain time, and I have started a mini-KAL in my Ravelry group, Knit Graffiti Designs, for any of you who want to chat, talk about colors, and show off what you’re working on. Sending love.

Studio Sampler : Sometimes all I want on my needles is a sampler. You know what I mean? A project that lets you try out different stitches and techniques, while also playing with color. This asymmetrical triangle shawl is the perfect canvas to try out new textures and play with color! This pattern uses a combination of garter stitch, garter stripes, two-color moss brioche, and two-color brioche.

I originally designed this shawl for the Knitting in the Hills Retreat 2020, hosted by Hill Country Weavers! I wanted to create a pattern that was a sampler of a lot of the techniques I taught my students there, so that they could take something home to practice all the fun new stitches.

Grab 3 skeins of fingering weight yarn in your favorite color palette!! Anything goes for this pattern: speckles, variegated, semi-solid, solid! It all works. Choose any combination of these for the ultimate shawl sampler! You can see the yarns that I chose for my sample in the last photo on this page.

Skill level: Beginner brioche friendly!! Basic brioche skills are not required, this is a fantastic pattern to learn with. Techniques used: knit, purl, knitting increases and decreases, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), asymmetrical triangle bias shawl shaping. I wrote this pattern to be very approachable to beginners who want to try brioche knitting!! The brioche stripes are straightforward and broken up by garter stitch and garter stripes.

Construction Notes: This asymmetrical triangle shawl is knit sideways on the bias from cast on point to bind off edge. 2 stitches are increased at the right edge, while 1 stitch is decreased at the left edge. You will be knitting several stripes all using different textures and patterns. These will be repeated three times, using different color combinations! You will begin with simple Garter stitch to get your shawl going, then move on to Garter Stripes, Two-Color Moss Brioche, and Two-Color Brioche. After working one section of these stripes, you will switch your colors and work similar stripes again! The final section and border are smaller versions of the stripes you worked before, while switching colors one more time. You will end with a soothing Garter stitch border, in the same color you started with. I love this shawl shape! It is my favorite to wear, and is so easy to style with your favorite outfit! I wear it kerchief-style around my neck and shoulders both at home and out on the town!
