Description

There is nothing quite as beautiful as the knitwear worn by the Bajorans in Star Trek. I was watching an episode of The Next Generation with one of my favorite characters, a Bajoran named Sito Jaxa, and she walked onto the scene wearing the most delectable oversized open mesh textural cardigan with the sleeves rolled up. I thought to myself, “I must have that.” Together with my friend and fellow Trekkie, Lauren of Old Rusted Chair artisan yarns, this dream came to life!! Meet Sito Cardi! This is the ultimate layering open cardigan; throw it on over your favorite outfit for a night out, or even over your jammies for a weekend in.

YARN KITS AVAILABLE!! Lauren dyed this very special color way, Jaxa, especially for this design! You can grab some of your very own here!! She also has a lot of other gorgeous colors that would work well with this pattern.

This open cardigan is full of texture and drop sleeves, knit using a combination of garter and honeycomb brioche stitch. This lightweight open cardigan is meant to be worn with 4 – 6” / 10 – 15 cm of positive ease. The sizes shown in the schematic (last photo here) are the actual bust measurements of the garment.

Skill level: Intermediate. Basic brioche skills are not required, but are recommended. Techniques used: knit, purl, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), knitting in the round, short rows. Honeycomb brioche is a beautiful texture created by using brioche knitting techniques. I have included a video tutorial link for this stitch pattern, which you can also find here: https://youtu.be/LIzO1DI9PPM

Construction Notes: This cardigan is knit from the bottom up, beginning with a garter stitch split hem. The Fronts and Back are knit separately, then joined together to create the Main Body. The body is made up of mostly Honeycomb Brioche, which creates a double layer mesh fabric, with garter stitch bands at the front. The Fronts and Back are then separated to create the sleeve opening, and knit separately up to the shoulders. The Three-Needle Bind off is used to seam the shoulders to give extra stability and a clean look. The sleeves are worked mainly in Honeycomb Brioche, finished with a long garter stitch cuff to allow you roll your sleeves up for a relaxed look.

Finished sizes: Bust circumference: 34 {38, 42, 46} (50, 54, 58, 62)” / 86.5 {96.5, 106.5, 117} (127, 137, 147.5, 157.5) cm. These sizes are the actual bust measurements of the garment. Choose your size based on your own bust measurement and add your desired ease. Sample is shown in Size M on a 36” bust.
