Yarn Love: Heading to Brazos Valley Fiber Fest this weekend? Be sure to visit The Knitting Artist’s booth for some gorgeous kit options and to see the cowl in person!
Moonlit Jellies : A delightfully glowing cowl, knit using two-color brioche with mock cables creating jellyfish swimming in the moonlit sea.
Yarn Notes:
Grab 2 skeins of DK weight yarn in fun, vibrant colors for this cowl! These yarns inspired the design, as well as the dyer. I love the way variegated yarns look together with brioche, they help to break up the pooling and make it look so interesting. If you decide to substitute yarn, be sure to knit a gauge swatch to ensure you are happy with the fabric, the drape and at the pattern gauge. Please note that if you substitute yarn, finished size and yarn amounts will vary. The pattern repeat on this cowl is rather large, so if you do decide to modify the size, you will require more yarn if you decide to make it larger. I did use almost ALL of each color of my yarn for this sample!
Lisa from The Knitting Artist creates gorgeous works of art that resemble knit jellyfish swimming in a glowing sea of different colors. Her works of art inspired this design, and I love that her art also inspires her yarn colors. Be sure to check out her yarn and works of art on her website here!
See the last photos here of the yarn I used for both my samples in skein form!
Skill level:
Intermediate. This is a great pattern to learn a new brioche technique, the Brioche Star Stitch! Inspired by Katrin Schubert and Carissa Browning and their designs.
Techniques used:
Twisted German Cast On, knit, purl, brioche knit (brk), sl1yo, brioche purl (brp), Brioche Star Stitch, knitting in the round, Elastic Bind Off.

Construction Notes:
This cowl is knit completely in the round from the bottom up, starting immediately with the fascinating Brioche Star Stitch motif. This stitch is created by working a left-leaning brioche decrease then immediately increasing into the same decrease. I layered them in a different way to create a mock cable look. You will work ridges of the mock cable to mimic jellyfish swimming deep in the ocean. Then you will work even brioche, representing the middle of the ocean, finishing with a mirror image of the same mock brioche cables of jellyfish swimming in the shallow waters.
Cowls are just the easiest garments to wear and elevate any outfit. Throw it on easily over your favorite outfit to really dress it up, or even over your pajamas if you’re feeling chilly to add some luxury to your day.
