Frozen Sand : A simple, ethereal circular yoke sweater knit from the top down using two-color garter stitch, with lovely eyelet hem and cuff accents.
Yarn Notes:
Fuwa Fuwa is closer to a light fingering weight yarn than a true lace weight, due to the nature of the yarn content and fluff. Feel free to substitute a smooth fingering weight for this top, but be sure to swatch first to ensure proper fit. Your yardage / meterage amounts may vary if you choose to substitute yarn. Keep in mind that two-color garter stitch takes 2 colors and creates an illusion of a brand new color!
Skill level:
Beginner Friendly if you want to try your first top pattern!
Techniques used:
knit, purl, knit increases and decreases, yarn overs, knitting in the round, Twisted German Cast On, Elastic Bind Off
Construction Notes:
When I first designed my Stelliferous sweater, I knew I wanted to create a similar top shape but with only the two-color garter stitch. Fuwa Fuwa yarn was the perfect pairing for this stitch pattern, as the texture itself stands out and requires a simple fabric to really shine. The name of this pattern doesn’t scream “Springtime”, but was inspired by the colors of the yarn that I used. The new color that they create reminds me of sand on a frozen beach, maybe thawing in the springtime.
This circular yoke pullover top is knit from the top down entirely in two-color garter stitch. Sometimes refered to as micro garter stitch, this beautiful and completely reversible stitch pattern is worked by knitting one round with your Main Color, then purling the following round with your Contrast Color. After working a small neckband, you will begin the circular yoke shaping, which consists of shaping wedges within the two-color garter stitch. This creates a beautiful evenly shaped yoke. Before separating for sleeves, a few raglan increases are added to create a wonderful fit. After you separate the Sleeves and Body, the rest will be smooth sailing with simple two-color garter stitch in the round. The Body will be knit straight with no shaping for a cropped, boxy look, ending with an accented eyelet hem using your Main Color yarn. The Sleeves are nicely fitted, with a tight cuff and the same eyelet pattern as an accent.
This lightweight top is perfect for layering over dresses with its slightly cropped silhouette. I also love styling it over high-waisted wide-leg jeans or pants for a more casual look.
