Description

Ewe La La! Look at this summer shawl!! It’s an asymmetrical crescent shape, created using short rows and stripes, with a large lace border with eyelet motifs and exaggerated scalloped edges. I created this shawl for Do Ewe Knit? and their Summer Knit-A-Long 2019! I was able to pick out this yarn in person when I was teaching there in the winter of 2018, and I couldn’t resist these hot pinks together. I wanted to design a pattern that would be straightforward to knit, but exciting at the same time! The shawl is mostly garter stitch, but the short rows, stripes, and eyelet border will keep you engaged.

Grab 3 skeins of fingering weight yarn in a speckled gradient or fade to knit this oversized asymmetrical crescent shawl! I love to wear this shawl loosely around my neck and shoulders. It pairs perfectly over a favorite dress for fun date night, or with a light jacket for a night on the town.

Skill level: Beginner!! No brioche here, folks. Mostly garter stitch, with some short rows (no wrapping stitches), stripes, and some eyelet lace. Techniques used: knit, purl (very little of this), short rows, yarn-overs, knitting decreases, asymmetrical crescent shawl shaping.

I developed a fun increase for the border of this shawl, for which I put together a video tutorial here: http://bit.ly/k6stinc !

Construction Notes: This asymmetrical crescent-shaped shawl is knit from the top down, beginning and ending with the number of stitches needed to create the extra-long wingspan. You will begin with a decorative top edge that will also help in adding stability to the top of your shawl. The asymmetrical crescent shape is created by short rows. You will work 4 different Short Row Stripes to blend your colors before getting to the lace border, and your rows will get shorter and shorter the closer you get to the border. Once the border is reached, you will be knitting across all of the stitches once again. Your border will be created using Color C, and you will end by striping in Colors A & B again, and creating a beautiful scalloped edge.

This pattern has written instructions for the entire pattern, and includes charts for the border portion.
