Cosmic Western : An asymmetrical triangle shawl inspired by Nudie Cohn and his extravagant Rodeo suits, worked using a combination of garter stitch, garter stripes and two-color brioche brocade waves.
I originally designed this shawl with Madelinetosh to be showcased at DFW Fiber Fest in 2023 with their special show color, Nudie Suit. Completely inspired by Nudie Cohn and his signature flashy Rodeo suits, I wanted to create a shawl that resembled the floral motifs and sequin brocade.
Grab 3 skeins in complimenting colors for this one! I recommend a light / medium / dark for the best outcome. If you want to see the tones of your colors, take a black and white photo of your yarn! You can also grab a 3-skein fade or gradient. Speckles and variegated yarns are perfect for this pattern!
See last photo here for my yarn in skein form.
Skill Level:
Intermediate. I recommend previous brioche experience before knitting this shawl pattern.
Techniques used:
knit, purl, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), brioche increases and decreases, I-Cord Tab Cast On, I-Cord Bind Off, asymmetrical triangle shawl shaping.

Construction Notes:
This shawl begins with a gorgeous i-cord tab cast on, which continues as an i-cord edging along both edges for the entire shawl. You will alternate between garter stitch, garter stripes and one of my favorite two-color brioche stitch patterns that will create a brocade ripple in the fabric. The asymmetrical triangle shawl shape is created by increasing stitches only at the right edge of the shawl. The border is a garter stitch version of the brioche stitch pattern, which finishes in a beautifully scalloped trim!
This shawl is so fun to knit and wear, and will elevate any outfit. I love wearing this shape kerchief-style, wrapped around my neck with the bottom of the triangle pointing downwards.
This pattern is both written and charted for your convenience.
