BriornaMitts : Graphic fingerless mitts knit using a combination of two-color brioche diamond-shaped ornaments and two-color garter stitch backgrounds.

I’ve always wanted to design mitts that incorporated brioche, but wanted to include another stitch pattern for stability. So I took the motif from my Briornament Sweater and applied it to this pattern!

Yarn Notes:
Grab 2 skeins of fingering weight yarns in high contrasting colors for the biggest impact! The yarn base used in my original sample is now discontinued, but I really wanted a little sparkle in mine. You certainly can use 100% wool or a wool / nylon blend for yours. It does not need to have the sparkles. I chose a heavily variegated yarn for my Main Color and a tonal with slight variegation for my Contrast, both full size skeins. Each size will only need 1 skein for each color if you’re also using full size skeins. The variegated yarn creates an interesting effect within the two-color garter stitch! You could also use mini skeins for your mitts, two 20g minis for each mitt. This could be a fun way to have mismatched finished objects!

See photo here of yarn in skein form.

Perfect for gift knits!!

Skill Level:
Intermediate. I highly recommend previous brioche experience before knitting this hat. This is a great pattern to learn increases and decreases! Learning two-color brioche in the round is a fantastic and straight forward way to learn, I highly recommend it!

Construction Notes:
These fingerless mitts are worked completely in the round, starting with a two-color garter stitch cuff. After working this short cuff, you will begin the Large Briornament motif that will adorn the Back of the hand, surrounded by a two-color garter stitch background to really help the brioche diamonds to pop. After completing the first Briornament, you will begin the thumb gusset (the Right and Left hands are different placement) which are also adorned with Small Briornaments on the Back of the hand at the same time. The thumb gussets are created by increasing stitches in a triangle shape at a certain placement, depending on which hand you are making the mitt for. Once the increases are made for the thumb, you will place these thumb stitches on hold to be worked later. You will cast on a few stitches to replace those used for the thumb shaping, and continue with the hand. Another Large Briornament adorns the Back until you reach the top, which will be bound off loosely. I like my mitt to hit right below my pinky nail, but these mitts are easy to modify by adding extra length if you want it. The thumb is then finished by working a few decrease rounds for shaping, then bound off right above the knuckle.

These mitts are perfect for those chilly days when you need a little extra warmth for your hands, but still want the use of your fingers.
