Introducing my very first mini skein design!! This rectangular shawl / poncho was designed to be knit during the holiday season, while opening one mini skein each day during the month of December leading up to December 25th. I wanted to design something that would give you comfort during the season, whatever that may look like for you. Something you could bring to a holiday gathering, something mindless and repetitive that would keep you company at home while curled up and cozy. Whatever the holidays look like for you, I hope this pattern can bring you comfort and joy.
This pattern was written especially with an Advent / Holiday Calendar in mind, specifically the Fellowship of the Ring calendar dyed by Robin’s Promise in 2023. It uses 25 mini skeins (approximately 20g each) and 1 full size skein of light fingering weight yarn (100g). Songbird is a light fingering weight yarn, so be sure to check the yardage / meterage if you are substituting. The yardage / meterage is an approximation based on using almost ALL of each mini skein. Please note that I’ve added a 5% buffer for all skeins to account for differences in gauge and tension. I did have yarn leftover when I completed my garment.
Skill Level:
Beginner friendly! The lace pattern is great for any beginners wanting to learn a bit of lace.
Techniques used:
knit, purl, double yarn-over, knitting increases and decreases, Twisted German Cast On, Elastic Bind Off, knitting on the bias
This pattern has both written instructions, as well as an optional chart for the Lace sections.
Construction Notes:
This pattern begins with only a few stitches. You will cast on and knit a garter stitch triangle, increasing one stitch at the right edge and 2 stitches at the left edge, until you reach the number of stitches required for the body of the shawl / poncho. Once you have reached the correct stitch count, you will begin knitting on the bias. Alternating stripes of garter stitch and open lace make up the body. You will also be alternating between the colors of the mini skeins and the full size skein, so that every day brings a new surprise. The shawl ends with another garter stitch triangle, but this time you will be decreasing down to only a few stitches in the opposite corner. This helps the garment to retain its rectangular shape, while allowing the diagonal stripes in the body.
There are a few ways to wear this as a finished object:
- As a rectangular shawl / wrap, as it is. It can be wrapped around your neck tightly like a scarf, or folded in half and worn as a stole. It’s very long either way.
- As a poncho / cowl / hood. Folded in half, buttons are added to the ends of the last half of the shawl, which affix to the lace on the opposite edge of the first half. The buttons are affixed leaving a large enough gap for a neck opening and another for one arm to fit through. After buttoned, there are a couple ways to style: The first, place the largest opening over your head, then button the buttons, creating a lovely garment (like the cover photo). The second, the opening that was not buttoned (a loop) can be wrapped around the neck like a cowl, which can also be used as a hood. One of your arms fits through the arm-hole made between the buttons, creating a garment that is like a traveling cloak / poncho. This is the way I have designed this Adventcho to be worn! Instructions and a photo tutorial on how to add buttons to your garment are included. I’ve also included photos for other styles.
I was inspired by the costumes worn by the characters in The Lord of the Rings films, directed by Peter Jackson. From which Susan also drew her inspiration for this Advent Calendar!
