Stellaire :: Knitting Pattern PDF

Stellaire :: French for Stellar. The beautiful names of the La Bien Aimée color ways inspired me to create a nebula-like brioche stitch pattern! They will have some lovely kits for this shawl, starting next week! See below for notes on choosing your own colors.

Stellaire is a super easy-to-wear asymmetrical triangle shawl with two fading actions: from light to dark and from two-color garter stitch to two-color brioche lace. This is the perfect pattern for anyone wanting to dip their toes into brioche lace knitting!

Skill level: Beginner Brioche friendly! Basic brioche skills are not required. Techniques used: knit, purl, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), very simple brioche increases and decreases. I wrote this pattern to be very approachable to brioche beginners!!

Construction Notes: This asymmetrical triangle shawl is knit from cast on tip to bind off edge, with increases along the right edge. The shawl begins with relaxing two-color garter stitch, while engaging two-color brioche lace stripes are added in gradually as the shawl grows, creating a pattern fade in the overall shawl design. As the two-color garter stitch sections get smaller, the two-color brioche sections grow larger, until they are equal in width. This is the point where the super fun color blending comes in! This pattern has been written specifically for the color blending method that I used in the shawl, but feel free to not blend your colors, or use the same method to blend in even more combinations than I used!

Sizes: One size: 77” / 196cm wingspan x 44” / 112cm at deepest point, measured after blocking. Schematic included in pattern.

Yarn: 1,380 yds / 1,261 m Fingering / Sock weight yarn
Main color 1 (MC1): 380 yds / 347 m
Contrast color 1 (CC1): 380 yds / 347 m
Main color 2 (MC2): 320 yds / 293 m
Contrast color 2 (CC2): 300 yds / 274 m

Choosing colors for your shawl:

• If you want your shawl to look similar to my original sample, be sure both your Main Colors (MC1 & MC2) are lighter and VERY close shades of the same color. Be sure both your Contrast Colors (CC1 & CC2) are darker and VERY close shades of the same color. The MC2 and CC2 should be slightly darker than your MC1 and CC1. The pattern is written for this specific fading technique, where you start with MC1 and CC1, then fade to MC2 and CC2. See photo above.
• Your MC’s and CC’s can be completely different colors! Look for two colors that are complimentary, the CC yarns much darker than your MC yarns. That way they will really POP in the brioche sections.
• There is no need to fade your colors! Simply choose 2 skeins of the same color for your MC, and 2 for your CC, and knit the shawl without changing yarn colors halfway through.

Needles: 32” or longer US 4 / 3.5mm circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge. Circular needles are used to accommodate large number of stitches and for two-color garter and brioche knitting.

Tools: tapestry needle for weaving ends, row counter

Gauge: 24 sts x 40 rows = 4” / 10cm; measured in two-color garter stitch (taken after blocking). Stitch pattern for swatch included.
