Chapter 1, Pattern 1: Hint Hint.
A one-color brioche hat with an open lace crown and ribbed brim. This is the first pattern of the book, and a fantastic introduction to brioche knitting.

Begin the ultimate brioche journey with this hat pattern! One-color brioche in the round is a fantastic way to learn the basics of brioche without having to worry about multiple yarns. And combining brioche with simple ribbing and lace makes it just plain fun! Hint Hint is a slightly over-sized bulky-weight beanie with a ribbed brim, one-color brioche body, and an open lace crown. Grab some variegated or slightly speckled yarn to play with color and texture! I chose a neutral yarn with just a hint of deep color, hand-dyed by Adria of Onyx Fiber Arts. Her eye for color is beyond amazing. The subtle speckles of hot magenta and indigo blue in Nova will mesmerize you.

Yarn Notes:
If you would like to substitute yarn, please note that yardage / meterage amounts may differ. This is a great way to play with speckled or variegated yarns!

Skill Level:
Beginner Brioche Friendly! This is a fantastic first project if you are brand new to working this technique!!

Techniques Used:
Long Tail Tubular Cast On, knit, knit decreases, yarn overs, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), sl1yo, knitting in the round.

Construction Notes:
This hat is knit completely in the round, starting at the bottom of the brim and working to the top of the crown. You will begin with the Long Tail Tubular Cast On, which creates a beautifully machine-made look and is perfect to transition to 1×1 ribbing. You will knit 1×1 ribbing for a cozy brim before moving to One-Color Brioche. This will create a tighter brim, as the brioche will open up with blocking. After working One-Color Brioche, you will work a lace crown for a lovely finish to the hat.

» One Size for Adults
20″ (51 cm) circumference and 10″ (25 cm) height

» Gauge
12 stitches and 12 rounds = 4″ (10 cm), measured in even one-color brioche stitch in the round (taken after blocking)

MATERIALS:

» Yarn
115 yds (105 m) bulky weight

» Shown In
2 skeins Onyx Fiber Arts Bulky in Nova (100% Superwash Merino; 106 yds 97 m per 100 g)

» Needles
16″ (40.5 cm) and 40″ (101.5 cm) US 9 (5.5 mm) circular needle or US 9 (5.5 mm) DPNs, whichever method you prefer for knitting small circumferences in the round (Adjust the needle size as needed to achieve the proper gauge.)
