Dandelion Fields Poncho :: A poncho knit from the top down, with delicate lace inspired by blooming dandelions, knit using the two-color brioche stitch. This poncho is like the big sister to my Dandelion Fields shawl design! When I first designed Dandelion Fields, I almost immediately thought of how cool these stitch patterns would look together as a poncho! As you can see, it morphed into something a little different, and I picture it as dandelions scattered throughout a field of grass, waving in the summer breeze.

Skill level: Intermediate. Basic brioche skills are not required, but are recommended. Techniques used: knit, purl, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), brioche increases and decreases, knitting in the round.

Construction Notes: The idea and inspiration for this poncho came to life by imagining rows of dandelions in a field, blossoming and blooming until finally releasing their seeds into the wild. This poncho is knit from the top down and completely in the round, starting with an open neckline and collar to give it stability. The circular Pi shawl shaping technique, a la Elizabeth Zimmerman, which begins with very few stitches, doubles the stitch count at larger and larger intervals (i.e.: after 12 rows, then 24 rows, etc.) to achieve its overall circular shape and fit well around the shoulders and neckline. The rest of the poncho is more open and A-line, to fit more comfortably over your tank top or jacket for extra warmth. Fun and relaxing brioche lace stitch patterns emerge between each increase row, creating a garment that you will wear for a lifetime.

Sizing:
S (M, L): 42 (48, 54)” / 107 (122, 137) cm circumference measured at bustline and 24” / 61 cm depth, measured after blocking.

Notes about choosing your size: This poncho is designed to be worn with 10 – 12” / 25-30 cm of positive ease. The sample poncho is size M, modeled on a 36” / 91 cm bust with 12” / 30 cm positive ease. Choose your size by measuring your bust and finding your desired amount of ease.

Needles: US 5 / 3.75mm circular needle (or size needed to obtain gauge) in the following lengths: 16” / 41cm (for cast on and collar), 24” / 61 cm (optional) & 32” / 81 cm (plus 2 additional optional circular needles for ease of knitting). Circular needles are used for knitting in the round.

Tools: tapestry needle, row counter, stitch marker for noting beginning of round

Gauge: 17.5 sts x 18 rows = 4” / 10 cm; measured in even two-color brioche stitch in the round (taken after blocking).
