Description

She only loved the espresso at the Grand Hotel, and frequently spent her evenings there, drinking coffee in her favorite cocktail dress :: An elegant rectangular stole with chevron stripes, tweedy texture, and pom tassels, inspired by early 20th century fashion. All knit using a combination of one-color, two-color, and three-color brioche.

This stole was completely inspired by the amazing ladies of Lattes and Llamas, and their love for coffee. The colors of the yarn we chose together for this design remind me of the beauty found in the film, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, created by one of my favorite film-makers, Wes Anderson. I picture a lady of leisure wearing this stole around her shoulders over her favorite cocktail dress for an evening of Coffee at the Grand.

Skill Level: Intermediate. Basic brioche skills are not required, but are recommended. Techniques used: knit, purl, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), brioche increases and decreases, three-color brioche texture, making pom tassels (optional).

Construction Notes: This rectangular stole is knit from side to side, cast on edge to bind off edge. The lace pattern within the One-Color Brioche Borders and the Two-Color Brioche Stripes create an elegant chevron pattern. In between these two sections is some exciting Three-Color Moss Brioche, which creates a gorgeous texture for the ends of the stole. After blocking, the chevron pattern in the borders creates a beautiful scalloped edging to complete the stole. All three of these stitch patterns create a completely reversible fabric!

This pattern is both written and charted for your convenience! I have also included a two-page photo tutorial for creating your very own Pom Tassels!

Size: 57” / 145cm long x 21.5” / 55cm at widest point, measured after blocking. Simple schematic is included.

Yarn: 975 yds / 891 m Fingering / Sock weight yarn
Color A: 395 yds / 361 m
Color B: 290 yds / 265 m
Color C: 290 yds / 265 m
Pom Tassels (optional): 200 yds / 183 m

Shown in:
Color A: 1 skein Lattes and Llamas Interlude in Palpatine (BLACK; 70% Superwash BFL, 20% Silk, 10% Cashmere; 438 yds per 100g)
Color B: 1 skein Lattes and Llamas Interlude in In Omnia Paratus (YELLOW; 70% Superwash BFL, 20% Silk, 10% Cashmere; 438 yds per 100g)
Color C: 1 skein Lattes and Llamas Interlude in Little Princess (PINK; 70% Superwash BFL, 20% Silk, 10% Cashmere; 438 yds per 100g)

Notes about choosing yarn: Choose three colors of different tones for the best result: one light, one medium, and one dark! If you are wondering if your yarn will work, take a black and white photo of the yarn and compare! I highly recommend choosing three solid, semi-solid, or tonal colors for this shawl. Three-color brioche creates a gorgeous texture, but could be lost with a variegated or speckled yarn.

Needles: 24” or longer US 5 / 3.75mm circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge. Circular needles are used for brioche knitting.

Tools: tapestry needle, row counter, optional locking stitch marker for noting MS of work.

Gauge: 24 sts x 18 rows = 4” / 10cm; measured in two-color brioche lace stitch pattern (taken after blocking).

Thank you thank you to the sweet ladies of Lattes and Llamas yarn for this wonderful collaboration! I also want to thank my amazing tech editor, Meaghan Schmaltz notsorryknitter, and all of my fabulous test knitters!! Without them, this pattern would not have been possible.
