Yarn kits: Aya Fibers has put together some beautiful (ahem BLUETIFUL) yarn combinations for this shawl, for both sizes!! Use code BLUE for 10% off your kit through Sunday! Check their website for more information!
Bluetiful : A rectangle-shaped shawl in 2 sizes, knit using a combination of garter stitch diamond lace medallions and two-color brioche zig zags. You might remember my Mauvelous shawl pattern? Well, when Mara of Aya Fibers wanted to do another design collaboration, we thought it would be fun to create a rectangular version of the shawl using icy blue tones!
The sizing of this shawl depends on the yarn that you use. I wanted to offer different options so that this pattern could be accessible for those who only have access to fingering weight yarn, or simply prefer to work with it. Heavy fingering weight yarn may be substituted for Sport weight. Please note that if you are substituting yarn, your yardage / meterage may vary, as well as the final shawl dimensions.
Skill level:
Beginner brioche – Intermediate. Basic brioche skills are not required, but are recommended.
Techniques used:
knit, purl, simple lace knitting increases and decreases, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), simple brioche increases and decreases (no br4st dec!!), traditional rectangular shawl shaping. Construction Notes:
Bluetiful is a rectangle-shaped shawl knit from side-to-side. You begin with a garter stitch lace border, utilizing the Diamond Medallion stitch pattern that I love so much. After that you will work the main two-color brioche body, which uses simple brioche increases and decreases to create an interesting zig zag pattern, with a large diamond motif in the middle. For the center focal point of the shawl, you will work the garter diamonds again, and then you will finish the shawl so that it mirrors the beginning.
There is no shawl shaping in this pattern; it is simply worked from cast on to bind off edge. I find it very relaxing because there are a lot of even brioche brain breaks in between the increase / decrease rows that create the zig zag stitch pattern.
I love wearing this shawl wrapped loosely around my shoulders for a more formal look, or wound tightly scarf-like on those extra chilly days.
