Description

Gem Waves is a crescent-shaped shawl knit using a combination of garter stitch, two-color brioche, and eyelet stockinette stripes to create brilliant texture that resembles waves. I was inspired by my Gulf Waves shawl pattern, and wanted to create a larger, two-color version! Grab two skeins of fingering weight yarn for this textural shawl! The textures created in this pattern are perfect for showing off speckled and variegated yarns as well as solids and semi-solids! Grab those two special skeins that have been sitting in your stash or dash out to your LYS to get brand new ones!

Skill level: Beginner brioche friendly!! Basic brioche skills are not required, this is a great pattern to start with if you’ve never tried two-color brioche knitting! Techniques used: knit, purl, eyelets, stripes, lace knitting increases and decreases, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), sideways crescent shawl shaping. I wrote this pattern to be very approachable to brioche beginners who want to learn the technique, with lots of breaks between the brioche sections!! Links to video tutorials for cast on and bind off included.

Construction Notes: This crescent-shaped shawl is knit from side to side, beginning and ending with garter stitch stripes. Very few stitches are cast on, and the shawl grows within the garter stitch stripes. Once the center section is reached the shawl is knit with no shaping, and textural waves are created within the fabric by alternating between Two-Color Brioche and Eyelet stockinette stripes. After completing the stripes, garter stitch stripes and shawl shaping resumes, ending with few stitches. The crescent shape is created in the blocking process!

I love to wear this shawl around my neck and shoulders. It pairs perfectly over a favorite dress for fun date night, or with a light jacket for a night on the town.
