Organic Angles :: a cozy hat knit using a combination of two-color brioche angular stitch patterns, with a striped garter stitch short row brim.

Category: Tags: ,

Description

Organic Angles is a cozy hat knit using a combination of two-color brioche angular stitch patterns, with a striped garter stitch short row brim. Style it with part of the brim flipped up to create a flapper cloche!

Construction Notes: The body of this hat is knit in the round from the bottom up. It is divided up into 4 sections: 2 wide sections that add drama to the design, and 2 ladder sections that add texture. The combination of brioche stitch patterns and angles create an asymmetry to the hat, forcing one side up, and the other side down. After the crown shaping is complete, stitches are picked up around the cast-on edge of the hat, and short rows are worked in garter stitch stripes to create a symmetrical shape that is easy to wear.

Skill level: Intermediate. Basic two color brioche skills are not required, but are recommended. Techniques used: knitting in the round, knit, purl, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), brioche increases and decreases, garter stitch short rows.

If you have not yet tried knitting brioche, fear not!! This hat may look complicated, but the twists and turns are made by increasing and decreasing the brioche stitches and are so much fun once you learn! This pattern is written so that ANYONE can knit it, with links to videos teaching the techniques. I also highly recommend visiting Nancy Marchant’s website to learn more: www.briochestitch.com.

Size: One size: 21” / 53cm circ. x 9” / 23cm height; meant to be worn with 1 – 2” / 2.5 – 5cm negative ease, modeled on a 22” / 56cm head (all measurements taken after blocking; schematic included in pattern).

Yarn: 275 yds / 252 m Fingering / Sock weight
Main color (MC): 130 yds / 119 m
Contrast color (CC): 145 yds / 133 m

Shown in:
MC: 1 skein SilverSpun® Sock in Natural (87% Cotton, 5% Silver, 5% Nylon, 3% Other; 200 yds per 50g)
CC: 1 skein SilverSpun® Sock in Indigo (87% Cotton, 5% Silver, 5% Nylon, 3% Other; 200 yds per 50g)

Note about yarn: Due to the unique qualities of SilverSpun® yarn, this cotton blend yarn has memory and doesn’t stretch out. It makes for a dense fabric and so to accommodate I went up a needle size. If you plan on substituting a different yarn, be sure to swatch to ensure proper fit and sizing.

Needles: Small: 16” US 4 / 3.5mm circular needle
Large: 16” & 40” US 5 / 3.75mm circular needle for Magic Loop method, or US 5 / 3.75mm DPN’s.
OR size needed to obtain gauge.

Tools: tapestry needle for weaving ends, row counter, stitch marker for noting beginning of rnd, 2 removable stitch markers, optional 4 contrasting stitch markers for pattern repeats

Gauge: 24 sts x 36 rows = 4” / 10cm; measured in two-color brioche stitch in the round using Large needles (taken after blocking).

Many thanks to Laurie from Feel Good Yarn Co. for providing gorgeous SilverSpun® yarns, and to my talented brother, Peter Mowry, for his amazing photography! I’d also LOVE to thank my tech editor, Meaghan Schmaltz notsorryknitter for her amazing skills, and my awesome test knitters who helped tremendously!!
